I'm 5'4", 228 pounds, and I feel fantastic. I am still the slowest, fattest, weakest person at my box, but if me from one month ago walked in to give it a try, I'd be better than that person. And even better? I don't give a shit about the weight anymore, because one month in I am getting stronger, I feel better about myself, and I find myself caring about my health for health's sake. And I was actually damn proud of it, because I didn't quit. I just finished Helen in an impressive 21:00. It's replies like this that kept me out of Crossfit for months while I struggled in a gym and struggled with a diet, when what I really wanted to be doing was working in a gym with people who knew me and cared about my progress.Īnd then I finally decided that people who kept telling me to just "knock off 50 pounds and then start" were the ones that were full of shit. Most will have a free class you can try out. If you are interested in doing it, check out a few boxes in your area. There are amputees and people who are wheelchair-bound that do crossfit. There are options to make every work out doable for you by scaling the weights, reps, rounds, subbing different movements in, etc. I've lost nearly 10% of my body fat through crossfit and eating a mostly paleo diet in 7 months.ĭon't listen to anyone who tells you you have to be "in shape" to start. You can't out train shitty eating habits and JUST exercise only goes so far. You're going to need to handle your nutrition, too. Now I am able to work out 3-4 consecutive days without any problem, take a break one or two days and get right back at it. Everything sucked for me and my recovery time was horrid because my body just wasn't used to doing anything. I wasn't all that big in terms of height but I was 5'7, 225+ with around 33% body fat when I started 7 months ago. Expect to be sore, a lot at first but then a little less over time until it really isn't so bad at all. Make sure you find a gym with a good on-ramp program and make sure you learn how to scale appropriately. Do your research, because your box sure as shit won't do it for you. Don't drink the koolaid, and come at with a level head. The reason your ACL/MCL busting? Overuse with high volume workouts, and high load on joints that are not at all used to it. You're out for months, and the CF box is not held liable (you signed a disclaimer/release form). They'll just think "Oh you'll be fine, just do it. They'll throw you into shit, and scale to what they beleive you can do. A lot of coaches have been fit all their lives, and have no idea how it is to come from a overweight/obese point of fitness. You can get a level 1 cf cert in a weekend, and have 0 experience. The quality control in coaching is atrocious. I'm going to say be careful, and do your research on the box you join.
